Installation ‘40’:1”’ for Amsterdam Light Festival
LOCATION: Amsterdam, the Netherlands
YEAR: 2018–19
STATUS: Competition Finalist
‘40’:1”’ is about the effect of scaling up that light medium can generate. It is about the enhanced impact of technology surrounding us and expanding our capacity to interact with the physical world and ourselves. Light fibres are entwined with each other and the visitor, producing a three dimensional superimposition between light and human body. The geometry and the constant transformation of light over time provide a magnified section view through abstracted brain activity. We understand this in relation to the theme as a metaphor for the constant evolution of technology that reshapes the way we perceive ourselves. ‘40’:1”’ represents the scale ratio between 1 second of human brain activity and the time (40 minutes) it takes for the most up-to-date supercomputer to simulate it.
A project in collaboration with Matthjis La Roi.
