Masai settlements, Clay Village is a new focal point that welcomes visitors and locals to rest, learn and immerse themselves into the world of the natural beauty of the National Reserve and the Masai culture.
The village is formed by five buildings that enclose a central courtyard. The entrance, the teaching area , the exhibition, the
cafe and gift shop open towards the courtyard while offering key views to the West and Southwest. The building construction utilises local materials featuring dry pressed clay bricks that form permeable curved walls, timber ventilation louvers and thatched roof at the top.
The open spaces between the earthy curved walls create special moments where people can be both inside and outside the village.
These spaces are covered by the overlapping roof overhangs. The thatched roof shape and overlap are inspired by the Masai ‘Elongo’ shields and the way they are stacked at local shops.
